Is there potential for a DevOps wait line like Apple had for the iPhone?
Imagine you create a product so successful that on each release, people spend hours of their personal time to stand in a queue to acquire it. It is truly amazing to think about.
What is equally impressive is why? What was so compelling? This has been hashed and rehashed so to keep it brief. The iPhone replaced your calculator, game system, music player, maps, newspaper, etc.. Here is a link to over 50 things that it has replaced.
But what are other areas that may be in need of their own "iPhone". Is the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) or DevOps one?
Think about all of the elements that make-up the SDLC.
Epics
User stories
Requirements
Source code
Builds
Issues
Defects
Change control
Test plans
Test cases
Test results
Test automation
Code reviews
And many more...
Today, all of these elements are being individually deployed and integrated as companies attempt to develop a cohesive process for their own SDLC.
Just one question. Why? Is it because there is no "iPhone" for the SDLC.
So does this pose an opportunity? Would an integrated solution set and defined process make you willing to stand in line? Or do you like being able to pick your own calculator, music player, map provider, etc?
Are the individual tools really what is driving the value in your process?
What would you like to see?
a single set of integrated tools?
a pre-defined process flow?
a cloud-based or on-premise solution?
single monthly fee for everything?
